Home security: burglary protection, fire protection and water sensor

In our homes, we don't just want to feel safe, we want to feel secure. This article looks at some important aspects of home security: protection against burglary, protection against fire and prevention of water damage. According to crime statistics, the number of burglaries has unfortunately reached a high level in Switzerland.

Smoke detector

Smoke alarms should be placed in all bedrooms. They are installed on the ceiling, approximately in the centre of the room. Tumble dryers are a possible cause of fires, so it is important to clean the dust screen regularly. A smoke detector should also be fitted in the room where the tumble dryer is located. If the tumble dryer is located in the bathroom, a heat detector can be used as an alternative.

Water sensors

Place water sensors in strategic locations in the house, such as near washing machines or hot water boilers. Install them near the floor where water collects. Pay particular attention to areas with an increased risk, such as basements or holiday homes.

Timer

Timers, especially those with random generators, are ideal for burglary protection. Connect a lamp to simulate presence and deter potential burglars.

Burglary protection

Effective burglary protection often starts with simple but effective measures. For example, timers and television simulators can be used to give the impression that someone is at home, even if this is not the case. These devices switch on and off at different times, which deters potential burglars as they can never be sure whether someone is there or not. In outdoor areas, motion detectors are also an effective addition to burglary protection. They are activated by movement and switch the light on automatically, which can deter potential intruders. Windows and doors should also be fitted with robust locks and security bolts. Additional security measures such as alarm systems and surveillance cameras can also make an important contribution to deterring burglars and provide important evidence in the event of a break-in.

Fire protection with smoke detectors

Fire protection is another important aspect of home safety that is often neglected. Smoke alarms are a simple but extremely effective way of saving lives and preventing damage to property. These small devices can provide early warning of smoke development and sound the alarm in good time, giving residents enough time to get to safety and alert the fire brigade. Smoke detectors detect smoke particles visually, which is why they are unsuitable for kitchens or bathrooms where steam is regularly generated. To avoid false alarms, heat detectors are more suitable in these rooms, as they react to heat rather than smoke. It is also advisable to have fire extinguishers in the house and to know how to use them. Regular maintenance and inspection of the electrics and other potential sources of fire can also help to minimise the risk of fires.

Water sensors for the prevention of water damage

Water sensors are an extremely useful tool for preventing water damage. These small devices can be installed in places such as the basement, kitchen or bathroom and recognise when water is leaking unexpectedly. As soon as water is detected, the device issues an alarm so that measures can be taken to prevent major damage.
